Nakai Masahiro, former member of Johnny’s group SMAP, has admitted to there being “trouble” with a woman. He claims that there was no violence, that the issue had been resolved, and that he “has been able to resume his show business activities.” The media (initially mainly Weekly Bunshun/Bunshun Online and Josei Seven/News Post Seven) reports that the so-called trouble was non-consensual sexual activity, that Nakai paid the woman 90 million Yen with a non-disclosure agreement, and that the woman has said that “My life will never be the same, that’s all” and “I still do not forgive what happened.” Bunshun also reports that the woman reported the incident to higher ups but that they never did any real investigation.

Rumors are that the woman is former Fuji TV announcer Watanabe Nagisa, who had health problems in 2023 (which possibly line up with when the above-mentioned incident occurred) and reported having PTSD in 2024 from what happened the year before. Fuji TV denied organizing or taking part in the event with Nakai.

Dalton Investments, a major shareholder of Fuji Media Holdings (the parent company of Fuji TV), has publicly demanded for a third party to investigate Fuji TV and what exactly happened, saying that the “uproar … reflects not only a problem in the entertainment industry generally, but, specifically, it exposes serious flaws in your [Fuji TV’s] corporate governance.” French media BFM TV has also picked up the story. This has seemed to force Fuji TV and other TV networks to take the issue more seriously. Fuji TV will be holding a press conference in the afternoon of January 17th.
The fact that foreign (Western) pressure was needed to break open the story in 2023 on Johnny Kitagawa and his sexual abuse and now, again, foreign Western pressure is what furthers investigation of sexual abuse by a VIP of show business draws parallels.

NHK writes that this is the first press conference given by Fuji TV after tabloid magazines first began to report on the incident.
The Radio and TV Press Club and Tokyo Broadcast Press Club requested Fuji TV to hold their February press conference earlier in order to address the current issue and Fuji TV accepted. This is the proximate cause of Fuji TV deciding to hold a press conference on January 17th. However, Fuji TV has decided to only allow reporters from associations that are part of the press clubs to attend the press conference, giving as reasons the size of the room and the inability to reserve a larger venue in the short amount of time. This excludes tabloid magazines, which were the first to report on the issue, and internet media. No live broadcasts nor live internet streams will be allowed. The Radio and TV Press Club and Encount, an internet news site, asked Fuji TV to consider taking the needed time to reserve a larger venue, but there is likely to be no change to the venue.

In the meantime, Nakai has been suspended, edited out, or replaced in a number of TV shows that he was a cast member of when reports of the incident surfaced. Also, in the meantime, other female Fuji TV announcers have come forward with allegations against Fuji TV. There is speculation that other female Fuji TV announcers who have not come forward were also victims of similar scenarios.

Which brings us to the speculation that Watanabe Mayu and Hashimoto Nanami retired from show business due to similar scenarios.
Hashimoto Nanami was an assistant MC on World Baseball エンタテイメント たまッチ! (Fuji TV) from April 2015 to August 2016 with Nakai Masahiro as MC. Ikoma Rina filled in for Hashimoto Nanami for the show’s November 2016 episode. (After that, the next episode with a new assistant MC was April 2017.) Hashimoto Nanami retired from show business in February 2017.
Watanabe Mayu was an assistant MC on UTAGE! (TBS) from 2014 with Nakai Masahiro as MC. In February 2020, she was suddenly absent from the show and then retired from show business in May 2020.

Update:
The press conference on January 17th was led by CEO of Fuji TV Minato Koichi.
Minato apologized for not giving sufficient explanation up to the present.
An internal investigation with an external lawyer was being done by Fuji TV since last year [2024], but in order to investigate whether the company’s actions were proper, a new investigative committee with a third party lawyer as its core has been established.
However, the company also stated that, “We do not believe that this is a third party committee that is in accordance with the guidelines of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations.”
The main controversies of Fuji TV at the moment are:
-Their denial that they had anything to do with the meeting of Nakai Masahiro and the female Fuji TV announcer.
-Their treatment of and internal investigation concerning the incident that the female announcer experienced (the company was aware from June 2023 that there was some issue).
-Whether the practice of Fuji employees setting up private meetings between women [e.g. Fuji TV announcers] and entertainers [e.g. VIPs in show business] is normalized.
Inquiries into these controversies will be entrusted to the new investigative committee.
To any questions about the details of the above issues, Minato refrained from answering and gave as reasons the protection of personal privacy of the people involved and because the details are the subject of the investigation.
NHK and private TV networks are not part of the press clubs (Radio and TV Press Club and Tokyo Broadcast Press Club) of which members were allowed to attend the press conference. NHK asked for permission to record the press conference via video but they were denied. Fuji TV asked that reporting of the press conference begin only after the whole press conference was concluded.
The press clubs are for press that report on radio and TV companies such as newspapers and news agencies, rather than for radio and TV media itself. Thus, no radio or TV media are part of those press clubs. Only after TV networks negotiated with the press clubs were NHK and private TV networks allowed to send an observer to the press conference. However, observers are not allowed to ask questions nor bring a video camera. Fuji TV’s reasoning was that the press conference is a regularly scheduled February press conference by the company that has been pushed forward to January. Video cameras have never been allowed in the regularly scheduled press conferences, and thus that is no different with this press conference.
A professor on media matters, Kageyama Takahiko, states that he found the attitude “backward-looking.” Although the establishment of a third party investigative committee is meritable, it seemed as though protection of privacy and human rights was given as an excuse to withhold information and explanation. He criticized the decision to not open the press conference to all media, especially as Fuji TV is a member of the media itself.
